What is Physiotherapy?

What does a Physiotherapist do?
A physiotherapist will assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal injuries and dysfunctions using a wide range of treatment techniques including manual therapy, manipulations, strength and conditioning rehabilitation, shockwave therapy, acupuncture and lifestyle advice.
Are Physios doctors?
No. They do have degrees and are fully qualified to assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions. We are trained to be a first contact for you to see with any disorders that involve bones, nerves, muscles, tendons and other soft tissues.
What to wear to a Physio appointment?
The physiotherapist will need to access the area you are seeking treatment for so please wear loose comfortable clothing. For example a vest top for ladies with neck or shoulder issues, and shorts for knee and hip issues.
How long is a Physio appointment?
An initial assessment will take approximately 45 minutes and a follow up appointment takes 30 minutes.
Can a Physio help arthritis?
Yes! Arthritis is a condition which is due to degeneration of the joints and tissues around the joints which causes pain. By mobilising the joint and strengthening and loosening the soft tissues treatment can help reduce the pain caused by arthritis.
Can a Physio help sciatica?
Yes! Sciatica is a condition whereby the nerves in the leg become irritable and painful, it can be accompanied with pins and needles and numbness. A physiotherapist will find out what is causing the irritation of the nerves and treat both the cause and the symptoms, reducing the pain and helping you move better so the nerve doesn’t keep getting irritated.

Can I self refer for Physio?
Yes, as our therapists are able to diagnose a wide range of conditions so we are able to be your first contact. Please note some insurers such as Westfield ask you to see your GP prior to attending physiotherapy – please check your individual policies.
How much does a Physio cost?
Our physiotherapy sessions are £50 for initial and follow up sessions.
Should I see a private physiotherapist?
There are certain benefits of seeing a private physiotherapist including no waiting lists, you can get an appointment within 24 hours; a wider availability of evening appointments, so you don’t have to take time off work; more hands on treatment, to ensure faster relief from pain and
longer appointment times, so you get more treatment per session.
